The
show draws inspiration form the lives of kings and queens and their courts in
the 18th century; especially it focuses on the debate concerning luxury that
developed in France in that period and involved philosophers and intellectuals
all around Europe. The performance is going to compare the meaning of luxury in
the past and in the present by means of music, dances and songs, through a
continuous shift between styles and times: from a nostalgic look on the past of
powerful kings to the depiction of today’s aesthetic trance. The
drammaturgical line takes the audience into different and opposite feelings and
perceptions: from the dream of a luxurious, entertaining and carefree life to
the awareness of the contemporary absence of any distinction where luxury
becomes an aesthetic tool and a mask. The costumes of the show reproduce the
18th century fashion and are made of either transparent or shot organdie. The
music follows the pace of luxury moving from classic authors (Vivaldi, Dvorak
and Mozart) to the new electronic-minimalist style. A court with its foolish and superb king and queen makes
a display of its power, partly out of servility, partly out of vanity. Young
courtesans flatter their king and jeer at the jester who tries to imitate him.
The queen leads the court balls displaying a faked fragility and happily showing
her cruelty. Some might regret the good old days…
